Getting Started with Your Move
- Visa: EU citizens can move freely. Non-EU citizens should research the D7 (Passive Income), Digital Nomad, or Golden Visa routes depending on their situation.
- NIF (Tax Number): Your first step — obtain a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF) at any tax office or through a lawyer.
- Housing: Renting first before buying is strongly recommended to understand which neighbourhood suits you.
- Bank Account: Open a Portuguese bank account — many banks now offer this to non-residents remotely.
- Registration: Register as a resident at the local Câmara Municipal (town hall) once you have an address.
- Community: Cascais has an active and welcoming expat community with regular meetups and social groups.
