🏡 Moving to Cascais

Practical advice for those considering making Cascais home

Why Cascais?

Cascais has become one of Europe's most desirable places to relocate. A combination of year-round mild weather, a thriving expat community, excellent infrastructure, proximity to Lisbon, and an extraordinary quality of life makes it a compelling choice for families, remote workers, and retirees alike.

Having hosted hundreds of guests at Casa Rosa House, we've helped many people fall in love with Cascais — and quite a few have gone on to make it their permanent home.

Quality of Life

☀️
Climate

Over 300 days of sunshine a year. Mild winters rarely dipping below 10°C, warm summers cooled by Atlantic breezes. One of the most pleasant climates in Europe.

🏥
Healthcare

Access to Portugal's public health system (SNS) as a resident. Several excellent private clinics and hospitals in the Cascais/Lisbon area. English-speaking doctors are widely available.

🏫
International Schools

Several well-regarded international schools in the Cascais/Estoril area offer English-language education (IB and British curriculum). Very popular with expat families.

💻
Remote Working

Fast broadband, excellent cafés, co-working spaces, and a thriving digital nomad community. Portugal's Digital Nomad Visa makes the legal path straightforward.

Practical Steps

Getting Started with Your Move

  • Visa: EU citizens can move freely. Non-EU citizens should research the D7 (Passive Income), Digital Nomad, or Golden Visa routes depending on their situation.
  • NIF (Tax Number): Your first step — obtain a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF) at any tax office or through a lawyer.
  • Housing: Renting first before buying is strongly recommended to understand which neighbourhood suits you.
  • Bank Account: Open a Portuguese bank account — many banks now offer this to non-residents remotely.
  • Registration: Register as a resident at the local Câmara Municipal (town hall) once you have an address.
  • Community: Cascais has an active and welcoming expat community with regular meetups and social groups.
